Chapter 14
Selwyn appeared back in the red tower facing the fireplace. He was glad he could to see his father and help Conrad, but he was happy to be back with his companions. Suddenly, a pair of arms wrapped around him from behind, and he jumped out of instinct.
âWhere have you been,â Rowena asked as she whirled him around to face her. âCulfang was about to go find and retrieve you!â She was so happy to see that he was safe that tears of joy filled her eyes.
âIâve been with my father.â The rest of his friends gathered around to listen to what happened. They were all taken aback when they heard Ladon had been in his lair waiting, and that he was dead once again. Culfang was more interested in The Mirror of Wandering than anything else Selwyn had told them.
âI for one wish I could have done battle with Ladon again.â Rylan would have liked to be the one to kill him.
âAs do I,â Osric had a grudge he would have liked to settle.
âIâm just glad everyone is alright.â Rowena was shocked that Ladon had returned. If he hadnât been found when he was he may have come after her once his scars hardened.
âAs am I, but I think it is time you all get some rest,â Culfang announced.
âWhat do you mean by, âyou allâ?â Osric asked. âWhat are you going to do?â
âI am going to Ladonâs lair to remove whatever powerful relics that may be there,â Culfang explained.
âAnd how are you going to do that?â Tiernan asked.
âI cannot always answer your questions. I will be back soon, and I would like to be up before the sun in order to see the view from the top of the tower.â
âOkay, say hi to everyone from us.â Rowena wasnât going to worry this night. She knew where Culfang was going, he would be safe and Selwyn was back with her.
âI will.â He then turned to the others. âThere is no need to set watch tonight. We will be safe inside these walls,â Culfang said pointedly to Osric.
âThe doors opened up to let the mounts in,â Osric protested.
âThat was in response to Tiernanâs inquiry about the steedsâ shelter,â Culfang assured him.
âIf I wake up to a blade at my throat, Iâll put the blame squarely on you.â
âI have no doubt.â
âOkay, time to turn in,â Tiernan said to put a stop to the argument.
âI will see you all in the morning.â He walked out the doors and disappeared.
It was still dark when everyone woke, and Culfang was back as he said he would be. They wanted to see the sunrise from the top of the tower, and it was decided breakfast could wait. No one wanted to miss the first rays of light illuminating Zarail.
There were small crystal globes set in the wall along the stairwell to light the way. Every ten feet they came to a landing that led to a new floor. Their anticipation grew with every landing. There was so much to see and explore.
